Gossip Girl returns for fifth run
Published on June 9th, 2012 ∙ Posted by Liliana

Everyone’s favourite socialites are back to their wicked ways as Gossip Girl returns for its hotly anticipated fifth season.

Vanessa Abrams (Jessica Szohr), and Jenny Humphrey (Taylor Momsen) are no longer around, but the good news is that main players Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively) and Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester) are back, along with bad boy Chuck Bass (Ed Westwick), his best friend Nate Archibald (Chace Crawford), and Brooklynite Dan Humphrey (Penn Badgley).

Season five opens in Los Angeles, very far away from the super rich, Upper East Side Gossip Girl base in Manhattan. Serena is spending the summer working as a production assistant in Hollywood. Chuck and Nate – who are still on their yachting trip around the globe – decide to pay her a visit, and Nate gets himself involved with a shady older woman (guest star Elizabeth Hurley) and Chuck has a meeting of minds with actress/stuntwoman Zoë Bell (playing herself) as he struggles to get over Blair.

Meanwhile, Blair and Louis return to New York from Monaco after spending the summer planning their wedding. Louis’ problem in supporting Blair’s difficult choices and nearly impossible demands threatens their relationship when she begins to see him as weak. Also, Dan gets help from Louis in a desperate attempt to prevent his book from being published in a local magazine.

Although Gossip Girl will be back for a further, sixth season, it will also be the show’s last. Leighton Meester, who plays Queen Bee Blair Waldorf, recently described the show’s demise as “bittersweet”, before adding: “But at the same time, it’s great to move on and do something different. Playing the same character for six years is great, but it’s exciting to do other things and also just sleeping and spending time with my family.”

Meanwhile, Irish Gossip Girl fans can look forward to a new and exciting arrival in the familiar shape of English actress Elizabeth Hurley. She plays Diana Payne, who’s been described by the show’s producers as “a sexy, smart, self-made media mogul and all-around force to be reckoned with”, and she ends up having a fling with the much younger Nate Archibald, who’s played by Chace Crawford.

In real life Crawford is twenty years younger than the 46-year-old Hurley, but he’s enjoyed working with her. “It’s been phenomenal,” he said, when asked about her. “She’s the most charming – I mean she’s still as gorgeous as ever. She keeps it light and she’s funny – she’s kind of the epitome, do you know what I mean, of the ideal woman.”

Gossip Girl returns to TG4 on Tuesday, June 12th.

Q&A with Ed Westwick
Published on June 9th, 2012 ∙ Posted by Liliana

If you’re a guy who has been bullied into watching Gossip Girl with your ladyfriend or seen photos of him online, then the Ed Westwick you think you know, is not Ed Westwick. After our interview with him it is clear that Westwick is nothing short of a gentleman and a professional; two all-important qualities many men leave behind in the great quest for sartorial glory.
Sure, sometimes Ed looks like he cares what face he is making in red carpet photos. You would too if every time you were caught blinking, it ended up on Perez Hilton with a crudely drawn pun (or dick) on your face.
Throughout our talk, Westwick discusses a multitude of different subjects, including his relationship with CFDA Lifetime Achievement Award winner Tommy Hilfiger, as well as what we can expect from his upcoming film adaption of Shakespeare’s, Romeo and Juliet. Although we are still unsure if we’ll be seeing that flick unless held at gunpoint by a woman. BUT, what we learned from Ed is that there’s nothing wrong with that, because ultimately it just means more chicks for him. Well played, sir. Well played.
Grungy Gentleman sits down with Britain’s top export, Ed Westwick after the jump…

Grungy Gentleman: You are a big advocate of Tommy Hilfiger and on Monday he’ll be receiving the CFDA Lifetime Achievement Award. Can you explain your relationship with him and why you dig the brand?

Ed Westwick: Yeah I’ve formed a relationship with Tommy [Hilfiger] for quite a few years now. I think it is one of the major fashion houses and always has been so, which is absolutely incredible. Tommy personally is an amazing man and designer. It’s a huge achievement. Some of the other people who have won it are equally as fantastic, so I think it is very fitting for them to be awarding him this. When I think of the brand the first things that come to mind are that it’s a very classic brand, always with that very classic look with the suits and a lot of the other garments as well. So I’ve had the great pleasure of wearing the clothes to events or even kind of just wearing the clothes out in my private life to social things. So it’s been a fantastic relationship. I rock Tommy frequently.

GG: What are the differences between women from New York and London?
EW: They are two very international cities, with a ton of culture. In each location, you get people from all over the world. I think maybe the fashion sense is taken a little more seriously in New York. I do not think it is specifically effort, but maybe a broader age of women are more conscious of fashion in New York. It seems like in New York, 99 percent of the women are ‘dressed-to-the-nines.’ I feel that is a testimony to New York, where fashion plays such a big role. A big thing for me also is, I don’t want to say women are necessarily more driven in New York, but maybe it’s just the girls that I’ve met, have been very driven.

GG: Well in New York everyone is going 100 miles an hour, seven days a week.

EW: Yeah exactly that’s it, and that’s definitely reflected in the women.

GG: You have several tattoos. Do you have a favorite? You’re character on Gossip Girl is very clean and he’s very into his power suits. Does your personal style differ from that?
EW: Yeah absolutely. We couldn’t be more polar opposites. My favorite tattoo would have to be my American eagle feather on the back of my left arm. To me, it sort of represents Native American culture and spirituality, as well as American freedom. The guy who tatted me up, did it really, really well. But again as far as mine and [Chuck’s] style, I am much more free spirited. He is very meticulous and as you said, loves the power suit.
GG: When we watch your show we see how cool you look in your suits and see your street style photos all over GQ and such. But for a guy who wants to go out at night, how do you think he should dress to go out to a club? I think this is a real conundrum amongst men.
EW: I mean I am always pretty casual in my personal life. Look, it’s dependent on the weather, because you know how hot it gets in New York in the summer; it’s like 100 degrees. So you’re strictly going to be in like jeans and a tee shirt or some linen pants and a tee shirt. Try to keep it light and try to keep it cool. Otherwise, jeans are always a go-to. You’ve got to have like three pairs of cool jeans, so you can just throw on a tee shirt or top and go out. There has been times where I have done the suit and pulled that look off. But most of the time, I just look for some jeans and cool boots. Another go-to I think everyone should have is a cool distressed leather jacket.
GG: Aside from acting, you perform in your band The Filthy Youth. What is the difference between dressing as a celebrity versus dressing as a rock star?
EW: Well I haven’t been doing the band thing for a little bit now, but I’ve always been heavily involved with music. I love music! I think there are two very different cultures if you will, a very kind of rock & roll specific type of culture, as opposed to when you’re going to a formal event for a movie premiere or the Met Ball. It requires something very traditional or classical as opposed to something rock & roll. When I’m performing with the band, I would wear something that is more that side of my personality and that side of my life. Where they differ is that for [the band] it’s not just about me, it’s about the band and that side of expression, so they’re two different things in that way.
GG: If you had your choice, how would you want Gossip Girl to conclude?
EW: Ah man that’s the billion dollar question, isn’t it? We have had so many cliffhangers at the end of seasons with like, ‘Will Chuck and Blair get together, won’t they?’ and obviously they haven’t. I mean I’m sure they’re going to give it the fairy tale ending the series deserves. Hopefully, Blair and Chuck will end up together. I would like it to end that way. But as to how, I am not sure how I want to see it happen.
GG: What types of projects are you looking forward to most after finishing Gossip Girl? Do you have any dream roles?
EW: Well sure you can dream and say you want to play James Bond one day. But for me it’s just about doing a range of genres, a range of projects, and they have to be great stories. That’s what you want to do; work with great stories and with great filmmakers. It all comes down to the story. You feel attached to something, you feel buzzed by something and that’s when you can kind of move forward with that. But for me, I think I am very much just at the start of my career, so I just want to play a range of different things and try my hand at anything.
GG: How does your upcoming movie, Romeo & Juliet, differ from previous versions of the story and do you have any good stories from the set?
EW: Well our version was adapted by Julian Fellowes, who everybody knows is an amazing talent. So to have the opportunity to work on something that Julian had worked on was a great privilege. So our version differs in the fact that we’ve added some scenes and altered the dialogue. I wouldn’t call it a facelift because I don’t think the play needed a facelift in any way because it’s a classic. But we’ve sort of just added our own unique angle on things and I think people will be very pleased with the result. I have not really seen anything yet, so I’m equally as excited and equally as clueless. But it was an amazing experience. I think as far as stories from the set, it’s kind of not so much stories, as much as just how important Romeo & Juliet is as a story to Verona, Italy. It’s something you really feel. You know that  you can go to Juliet’s balcony and it’s a huge tourist attraction for lovers and people who just want to go see it. In general for us, our whole experience of the film was a wonderful thing.
GG: I hear you’re a Chelsea FC fan. Do you attend games and keep up with the squad?  Do you follow any other sports and have other favorite teams?
EW: I do follow the games. Obviously most of the year I am in New York so I can’t really get to the games. But I am a huge fan and recently we won the European Cup, which was a massive deal. Whenever I’m back and the season is going on, I try to get to a game but it’s been a little wild. I’m going to have to make time next season to get to one. Being in the states has made me kind of start to understand American football. I’ve been a fan of everything but it’s helped me appreciate it a lot more. I’m a big fan of basketball, and I try to get to Madison Square Garden to watch the Knicks play. Although now I’m a bit disappointed that they lost in the first round of the playoffs. And now we have the new Brooklyn Nets kicking off and I’m really looking forward to that. I love to get my hands wet in all sports.
GG: Are you involved in any charity work?
EW: There is one charity I am trying to get involved in, Men’s Health Forum I New York. It raises cancer awareness for men. They are holding an event on Father’s Day weekend in New York. Unfortunately I am not going to be in New York that weekend, otherwise I would definitely be going. I think something like that is important. Anything I can do to help with treatment and awareness of that disease, I think is a great thing.
GG: What is your wildest story from Gossip Girl
EW: I think my wildest one was when one of our directors, while we were shooting at The Plaza Hotel, fell down the stairs, smashed his face, and completely broke his nose. It caused a bit of a panic. Luckily he was okay, but we were kind of left without someone at the helm. So the producers, who are very good at their job, but don’t really have any experience directing, had to kind of scramble around and put together a plan to try and get us through the day. And to their credit, they were able to pull it off effectively. But it was quite crazy and panicked for a moment. In one second, our director was just walking along and falls down some stairs and breaks his face…so that’s one that comes out when I think about it right now.
GG: What can we expect next from Ed Westwick?
EW: I don’t really have anything to announce right now. I’m just going to go back to chilling and then preparing to get back to work. Hopefully I’ll have some big, interesting things to announce  really soon.

Interview
Published on January 12th, 2012 ∙ Posted by Liliana

So we’re hearing this Ed Westwick fellow is kind of popular.

Understatement of the century? Probably. There’s no denying that Gossip Girl’s Chuck Bass is one of TV’s most iconic characters, with his outrageous outfits, snarky one-liners and ability to straddle the line between leading man and villain. There’s a reason he’s called the Dark Knight. Another reason he’s so popular? He’s one-half of one of the show’s fan favorite couples Chuck and Blair, also known belovedly as “Chair.”

We sat down with Westwick to talk about what’s ahead for Chuck and Blair (Leighton Meester), Chuck’s ability to defeat death, his feelings about Chuck’s evolution over the series and whether or not he’s ready to say goodbye to the show…

Are you surprised by how invested the show’s fans still are five seasons in, with your character especially?
Ed Westwick: Yeah, I am. I mean, it’s nuts. It’s still nuts. I was at the premiere for J. Edgar, this film I did a couple of months ago, and we were coming out of the premiere, which was at Mann’s Chinese Theatre, and I was crossing the street to the Roosevelt hotel where the cocktail reception was. I had to get a police escort across the street and I was like, ‘What is going on right now?!’ It’s daunting, but it’s amazing that everyone’s really still digging the show. It’s great. We’re still having fun doing it, so it works all around, I guess.

Obviously, I have to ask about Chuck and Blair. What can you tell me that’s coming up for them?
What can I tell you that’s coming up? There’s a wedding. I mean, look, with regards to, for my character of Chuck, she’s his muse, she’s his obsession. It’s drawn-out, but it’s so, like, heavy. He’s so into her. It’s such a big deal for him. It’s taken on a thing, like she is the air that he breathes, I guess. He wants at any cost to find a way to be with her and that’s what he’s doing for the rest of the reason, is trying, trying and trying. Of course, when something’s like that, sometimes you try bad methods, you try bad approaches. That’s kind of the flavor of our show anyway, double-crossing and whatnot. I still don’t know where it’s going to go, he’s just on a mission. What’s kind of interesting is he’s not devious in other ways like he was for the first three or four years and there was a bunch of stuff, like family that he was trying to figure out. It’s not really at the forefront of his mind now. It’s just how do I get to be with the girl. But if it was me, I would tell her to go and get lost a million years ago because I don’t care…there’s other people out there. That’s kind of what I want to do: I want to grab Chuck Bass and say, ‘There are other people out there, man. It’s not cool!’

Can you tease Chuck’s role in the 100th episode at all?
There is a wedding. There’s a car accident. That already happened. It just all goes together. Well, obviously, I survive that.

Death is kind of Chuck’s bitch at this point. He’s escaped it several times now.
[Laughs.] He’s the man of steel. It’s like that film Final Destination. That’s what it is! I’ll make the transition to Final Destination 55 or whatever. He just can’t be killed. I’ll just keep the franchise alive.

Looking at everything the writers have put Chuck and Blair through, do you think a happily ever after is even possible for them?
It’s an interesting question, because you think about it in yourself. I mean…when is enough’s enough? We’ve probably both been through relationships where so much has happened. It can be tainted, but it can just be too heavy. No matter how much you’re in love with someone, things can just be too heavy. And if it were me, as I was saying, you just need to pack bags, move away, you’ve got the money, go live in Tahiti or something. There’s no need to be there anymore. Of course, it’s what everyone wants to see, but I think that’s the interesting and alluring thing: how do they get them to come together, or will they?

Why do you think fans are so invested in Chuck Blair? What is it about them that has turned “Chair” into this iconic TV couple?
Look, for everything they have going for them, the money and the wit and everything, they’re still kind of an underdog couple because they’re still battling an uphill struggle: the external influences of everyone else in their world trying to get something from them or trying to get them. It’s tragic in that way. It’s kind of funny because I’m going to do Romeo and Juliet, the film, and in a way it kind of resembles that. That’s a romance tragedy and, in a way, Chuck and Blair are a romance tragedy. So much has happened that if they can’t get it together then that’s the tragedy because they do love each other and there’s been so much external influence. It’s everything else going on around you when you know it should just be you two.

When the possibility of a Dan and Blair romance was brought into the show, did you kind of go, ‘Really? Dan and Blair?’
I wasn’t like, ‘Really?’ because they had to do something. It’s season five. There are moments when I’m like, ‘Really? Come on!’  Because if it’s me, if I hate someone, I rarely am going to 180 it and be like, ‘I love you!’ That doesn’t happen for me. But in the world of television and the world of where we have to make stories that work, I guess you have to say anything’s possible. I think they have been smart about it. The character of Dan’s changed a lot. I find it funny because, even though I work on the show, I would not behave in any way like these people. Maybe that’s what we like because it drives us nuts, like, ‘What are you doing?!’

How do you feel about Chuck’s evolution over the course of the series and season five?
I’ve enjoyed it so much. In the beginning, he was just this kind of brat, this total brat and I enjoyed it a lot. I had a lot of fun playing with that and then we explored it and realized that there was this heart that had just been beaten down so much. Or a heart that had been ignored that it no longer knew how to beat really. Then this thing with Blair really was the ultimate kind of growth of that. The only thing that came out of everything was this girl embodies everything that I need in order to live. Look, it’s been really good. There’s things I miss. I miss the cocky one-liners. They’re still there, but it’s kind of in a different way now. I think in a way, he’s probably the most mature out of all of them, especially this season, which isn’t fun! No matter how old you are, people still obsess over one person or are so in love with one person and if it’s a soulmate and you feel that kind of connection then that’s what’s going to happen. Look, he’s got his business under control. He’s the youngest successful business man ever. Doogie Howser.

There’s always a lot of speculation going into each new season about who will return. You guys are contracted for six years, so could you see life going on with Chuck Bass beyond next season, should the show get a sixth season, or do you feel like that’s a good endmark for the show?
Yeah, I think that’s the end.

So you’re ready to say goodbye to Chuck Bass and the bowties?
No, no! I think that will be the end of that and then it’ll be time for me to do something else.

You filmed J. Edgar and are working on Romeo and Juliet, are you hoping to transition to film or are you open to doing more TV after Gossip Girl?
Absolutely, but I never say never to anything. I’m just happy to be doing a job that I love. This is a fantastic job to be able to do and a fantastic industry to work in. I love working in America, I love being part of the industry out here. But look, it’s been a fantastic experience with the show and if we do one more year, I’m sure it’ll be a great culmination of everything. I’m definitely ready to mix it up and do other things. I’m an actor; I want to play roles, not a role.

What do you think, Gossip Girl fans? Do you think a happy ending is Chuck and Blair’s future? Do you think it’s time for Gossip Girl to end? Sound off in the comments! {source}
