Everyone’s favourite socialites are back to their wicked ways as Gossip Girl returns for its hotly anticipated fifth season.
Vanessa Abrams (Jessica Szohr), and Jenny Humphrey (Taylor Momsen) are no longer around, but the good news is that main players Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively) and Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester) are back, along with bad boy Chuck Bass (Ed Westwick), his best friend Nate Archibald (Chace Crawford), and Brooklynite Dan Humphrey (Penn Badgley).
Season five opens in Los Angeles, very far away from the super rich, Upper East Side Gossip Girl base in Manhattan. Serena is spending the summer working as a production assistant in Hollywood. Chuck and Nate – who are still on their yachting trip around the globe – decide to pay her a visit, and Nate gets himself involved with a shady older woman (guest star Elizabeth Hurley) and Chuck has a meeting of minds with actress/stuntwoman Zoë Bell (playing herself) as he struggles to get over Blair.
Meanwhile, Blair and Louis return to New York from Monaco after spending the summer planning their wedding. Louis’ problem in supporting Blair’s difficult choices and nearly impossible demands threatens their relationship when she begins to see him as weak. Also, Dan gets help from Louis in a desperate attempt to prevent his book from being published in a local magazine.
Although Gossip Girl will be back for a further, sixth season, it will also be the show’s last. Leighton Meester, who plays Queen Bee Blair Waldorf, recently described the show’s demise as “bittersweet”, before adding: “But at the same time, it’s great to move on and do something different. Playing the same character for six years is great, but it’s exciting to do other things and also just sleeping and spending time with my family.”
Meanwhile, Irish Gossip Girl fans can look forward to a new and exciting arrival in the familiar shape of English actress Elizabeth Hurley. She plays Diana Payne, who’s been described by the show’s producers as “a sexy, smart, self-made media mogul and all-around force to be reckoned with”, and she ends up having a fling with the much younger Nate Archibald, who’s played by Chace Crawford.
In real life Crawford is twenty years younger than the 46-year-old Hurley, but he’s enjoyed working with her. “It’s been phenomenal,” he said, when asked about her. “She’s the most charming – I mean she’s still as gorgeous as ever. She keeps it light and she’s funny – she’s kind of the epitome, do you know what I mean, of the ideal woman.”
Gossip Girl returns to TG4 on Tuesday, June 12th.
